What’s tremendously aggravating is that Giuliani, and, in turn, the GOP, speak about making America safe “again.” He said that Trump “will make America, like the president I worked for, Ronald Reagan, once again be the shining City on the Hill.” But here’s the thing: During Reagan’s presidency, which lasted from 1981 to 1989, America was way more dangerous than it is today. In that era, there was an average of 20,377 murders a year in the U.S. There were 14,249 in 2014, the latest year with official FBI data. Meanwhile, the U.S. population has grown from 229 million to 310 million, a 35 percent increase, driving down the per capita rates. There’s also never been a safer time to be a child in America, and while an average of 101 police officers were intentionally killed every year during Reagan’s presidency, the annual number is just 62 under Obama — the lowest recorded amount.
Well you might want to get a little more up to date on your facts and reasons… it’s the laws and policies that were put into place by people like Regan that made the crime rates start dropping… now that Obama has been in office the rates are on the rise again… you can’t look at the numbers right when someone went into office…they take office…put in their policies …then you have to watch what happens after that…. after Regan’s administration crime rates and murder rates started dropping …now after 8 years of Obama they are on the rise again… because of the policies and things he has done while in office…and as it gets worse over the next few years it won’t be because of the new president…it will be because of the existing issues and policies of the current president…what happens 5 years down the road will be the effects of what the new president does…here is a recent article from Time magazine…you can find many others…crime and murder rates are rising faster than ever and that’s because of what Obama has done over the past 8 years…and next year will be even worse…the next will be even worse than that… unless the new president gets in office and starts fixing all of the issues Obama has let happen over his 8 years in office
New data points to 2016 as even deadlier than 2015
Major cities across the U.S. have experienced a surge in homicides in recent months, continuing a grim rise that began last year.
Murders are up in roughly 30 cities nationwide so far in 2016, according to data released by the Major Cities Chiefs Association on Friday. Nearly half of the cities surveyed showed increases in homicides in the first quarter of this year compared with 2015, when the murder rate in many U.S. cities rose after decades of decline. The data paints a varied picture: some cities have experienced a slight rise in murders, others have seen declines, while nearly a dozen metropolitan areas–including Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Memphis, Nashville, and San Antonio–have had sizable increases.
The report, which included 63 of the association’s 68 member departments, found that there were 1,365 homicides from January through March this year compared with 1,251 in 2015. Numbers for rape, robbery, aggravated assault, and non-fatal shootings—which saw a significant jump from 3,855 in 2015 to 4,673 this year—were all up as well.
Chicago experienced one of the biggest homicide increases of any city, jumping to 141 homicides in 2016 compared with 83 in 2015. In the last several months, the city has been roiled by fall-out from the fatal shooting of Laquan McDonald, a black teenager, by Jason Van Dyke, a white Chicago police officer in 2014. In April, a task force found systemic problems of racism and bias within the department, and protesters have repeatedly called for Mayor Rahm Emanuel to resign.
Other cities with significant increases included Dallas (45 homicides in 2016 compared with 26), Jacksonville, Fla., (30 in 2016, 18 in 2015), Las Vegas (40 and 22), Los Angeles (73 and 55), Memphis (48 and 31), Nashville (20 and 13), and San Antonio (34 and 23).
