A podium is something you stand on. There were no mics by their feet; however, there were mics positioned in front of them on the lecturn.

Lester hold did indeed have an earpiece which allowed his producer to communicate with him when it was time to wrap up segments. He was not allowed to get any help with questions though and the election commission monitored that. This was all disclosed several days in advance. Having read a few of the comments, it’s obvious that they did not the video of thus story line. There are some saying that Hillary had on a mke so the TV audience could hear. I’m not sure about that.
I do know one thing Lester Holt was told before hand no ear piece for this debate. That would include both candidates as well. It would appear that Mr. Holt doesn’t follow rules either. It’s obvious that Hillary had one on again too. While Howard Dean is accusing Trump of cocaine use because he had sniffles, nobody is calling Hillary out over the multiple times she was seen scratching her face near her nose.

The primary microphone for both candidates are installed at the top of the podiums. These are WIRED MICROPHONES. The secondary, or backup microphones, are the LAVALIERE (lapel) microphones pinned on each candidate. Generally…the WIRED podium microphones are preferred for cleaner pickup…less rustling of clothing, ties, fabric etc.. The LAVALIERE (lapel) microphones are usually WIRELESS units. A wire from the pinned microphone travels generally down the small of the back and is attached to a WIRELESS transmitter that sends sound to the audio mixing person. Standard presentation technology used EVERYDAY for corporate and broadcast events. The transmitters are roughly the size of a pack of cigarettes…but the are getting smaller every year. Hillary and Trump BOTH had LAVALIERE Mics pinned on them as backups. Neither candidate used illegal or banned ear-piece technology. Several wild speculations about this issue…but invalid. Lester Holt I am sure use an approved ear-piece commonly called an IFB. The IFB allows Les Holt (the moderator) to hear and speak with the TV DIRECTOR. The IFB is an absolute necessity for all major broadcast events. The Trump microphone worked fine for the live video feeds…no harm. Several audio/sound pros did notice a hollow sound in the arena, with a couple of minor feedback points. The Election Commision vaguely stated there was an issue wit the Trump microphone. The statement was made to make Trump happy, look better, and maybe return for the next debate. THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE TRUMP MCROPHONE. It was loud and clear on the live video feeds.
But…to be fair…their was a minor issue in the arena. A note on the sound technology and the sound-person’s technique: Generally, there should never be feedback with 2-3 live Mics.. Hollow sound? Arenas are known for crappy sound…but new technology is often rented for important events. Gee whiz…Mattalica sounds great in horrible arenas. IMPORTANT…Trump and Clinton’s Mics. seemed to be set a FULL broadcast levels. Can a live sound person rapidly duck the level of the person not speaking? Yes…but you will miss the first word or two when they start speaking again. It appears the director/broadcSters decided to keep both MICS. at FULL…picking up EVERY SOUND including sniffs, coughs, sips of water gurgling, and more sniffs. In fact…TRUMP’s microphone worked great. Now Mr. Holt’s microphone…how did the director, or sound designer, handle Holt’s microphone? Press to talk? With director’s cue? Interesting…eh?

Other POSSIBLE issues with Trump’s mic…did the sound guy use an expander/gate? I don’t think so…but if the sound tech did…it could explain some of the extraneous sound (note:expander so do breathe at times).

Why not an AUTO-MIXER? Yes…they exist. Best selling and most used? The Dan-Dugan auto-mixer is the first one I recommend. But…still some challenges with an auto-mixer. A good auto-mixer could be used with only the Trump/Clinton Mics. There are some tricks with even just two Mics.
Last thing…and I hope the broadcasters/director did not do this…was the live audio for video feed returned to the arena as the primary sound for the live audience? If they did do that…did the audio return feed INCLUDE THE AUDIENCE MICROPHONES, instead of a mix-minus? That would be a horrible mistake not limited to the inexperienced…pros mess up too. I worked on several ESPN AWARDS SHOWS and the truck returned program audio ncluding podiums,widgets, etc. into the live arena for the audience.
But they did it correctly with extra stuff in line.

The cueing, or communications, can include (if desired) suggested questions, follow ups, or FACT CHECKING! It is scary how misinformed people are. I really get a kick out of the earpiece controversy with the alleged cheating earpiece Clinton was using. She AND The Trumpster had WIRELESS MICROPHONES PINNED on their clothing as backups to the primary WIRED microphones. Amazing what people will believe.
