The sad reality is that Native Americans are rarely even mentioned these day unless politicians try to use them in their campaign. I try hard not to judge anyone. What could I do to Ms. Warren that would be worse than what she has done to herself? And her use of the college fund in the way that she did it, has exposed her own judgement of her character and the person she is. America will go to the greatest of lengths to preserve buffalos but Natives have had to fight for the right to simply exist as far back as I personally can remember, I’m sixty one years old.

Ok Ms. Warren, give me an example of any credit card company forcing any consumer to run up card balances that they can’t pay off.
Give me an example of any drug addict being forced to take the drugs. Any alcoholic being forced to drink the booze. Saying that the companies have to FORCE them to use the credit card is just idiotic at best. It shows your absolute ignorance about human nature.

Try buying food on an airplane without a credit card! American carriers don’t take American money….only credit cards…. therefore forcing you to get a credit card.
I will. I was doing very well financially owed 3k to Amex Blue, payment $75 per mo. My income then became severely reduced. A couple of late payments later my interest rate went from 9% to 29%. Payments including late fees of $35 per mo. Went to $275.00. Not being able take that payment, my balance quickly tripled as they applied interest also to the late payment fees. They refused to work out any arrangement to reduce late fee or interest. I had to stop paying anything. Eventually 5 years later they accepted the original balance as payment. By then my credit was ruined. I didn’t run up that balance. The law changed and allowed that ridiculous interest rate and fees. It’s a no win for someone responsible that gets in a jam.
One could argue you werent doing well financially if you were running balances on credit cards. What happens if you missed a payment was disclosed.

Nicely worded reply, Matt. This is the thing I keep beating into my kids: a credit card is for convenience, so you don’t have to carry a wad of cash in your pocket. My dad was pre-credit card, and if he needed to buy a piece of furniture, say, he would get the cash and walk into the store. If you don’t have the money in the bank, don’t buy it, how simple is that?
I understand people fall on hard times, but if you were “doing well” you would have a zero balance on your cards. Why don’t people see that?

Hmm i became disabled 4 yrs ago had to quit working completely after 35 yrs working 2-3 jobs, no income for 2 plus yrs while awaiting disability i paid into sadly my home was underwater i could not afford the mtg and having a 6 yr old daughter and only my husbands income we had to move into his UNDERWATER townhome that in 2006 appraised at $289k, he owed 225k well we tried giving it back to the bank, tried short sale, tried renting it, nope bank refused to modify even after the huge class action which part of the agreement the bank signed was to modify the mortgage which they never did. Sowe eventually left my house moved to his, they “modified” it but now we owe $325k due to only paying the one mtg on my house. Oh these townhomes are selling for $85k! The only reason we stay is the mtg is only $1000 they put 2 liens on the townhome and its a 50 yr mtg. So he had filed bankruptcy to speed up the foreclosure they refused to go forward with it just letting it grow with interest and late fees which they get bailed out by the govt also tax breaks. Did you know the govt paid all of the underwater mortgages off? So the fact they are still taking payments on them and putting liens on peoples homes is double dipping! Two yrs after he filed i filed bankruptcy after having to quit my job. It took 4 yrs for them to foreclose, i almost worked out a modification again they put liens on the house totally ignoring their huge class action agreement. The reason i refused the modification was they wanted an adjustable rate uhh no thank you. Well they took my house april 16th 2016! I could no longer fight, i have zero income i have 5 chronic autoimmune diseases and ptsd and anxiety. I buy groceries on our credit card, get car repairs, i get my daughters clothing. I learned how to penny shop at dollar general so i have gifts so my little girl can attend birthday parties of classmates or give gifts to her teachers.
I have had excellent credit around 800, i bought my first home as a single mom at 27 yrs old, sold it 6 yrs later for double then put 20% down on that last lost home, 2 yrs later lost my job in high end appliance distribution after being sexually harassed for 6 yrs so i filed a lawsuit but it took 4 yrs and he was sending a copy of the lawsuit to my new employers, he also blacklisted me amongst all appliance dealers leaving me starting fresh.
You think people want to file bankruptcy? They want to run up debt? Its not always fun crap people use credit cards for. Times like these where we went from a combined income of 125k a yr to $54k believe me it sucks.
My husband works for a comm college a union job his pay is the same as 9 yrs ago when we met, oh he has gotten raises but $600 plus taken for medical, pension payments increased to make up for the shortage caused by the thief cristie!!

In Bonnie’s case it was the banks! Not everyone can be debt free but when they change the rules it always hits those in the middle. I am retired, I saved to augment my social security. I now have very little principal left because the (illegal FED) decided io pay .0025 in interest instead of 4 to 5 percent. The only ones who benefited were banks, investment companies and insurance companies who could borrow cheap and make a killing in the stock market.
