DEBATE FACT CHECK – Hillary Was WRONG on Late Term Abortions
Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton continued her longstanding support of abortion rights and Planned Parenthood during the final presidential debate in Las Vegas, claiming that late-term abortions are usually performed because the mother’s health is in jeopardy.
“I strongly support Roe v. Wade, which guarantees a constitutional right to a woman, to make the most intimate, most difficult, in many cases, decisions about her healthcare that one can imagine,” Clinton said, adding that the issue is not only about Roe v. Wade, but also,”about what is happening right now in America.”
Debate moderator Chris Wallace asked Clinton how far a woman’s right to abortion goes, pointing out that she had said unborn babies have no constitutional rights and that, as a U.S. senator, she voted against a ban on late-term partial birth abortions.
Clinton replied, without ever using the word “baby” to describe an unborn child at any stage of development:
Roe v. Wade very clearly sets out that there can be regulations on abortion, so long as the life and the health of the mother are taken into account. And, when I voted, as a senator, I did not think that was the case.
The kinds of cases that fall at the end of pregnancy are often the most heartbreaking and painful decisions for families to make. I have met with women toward the end of their pregnancy get the worst news one can get: that their health is in jeopardy, if they continue to carry to term, or that something terrible has happened or just been discovered about the pregnancy.
Clinton winced as Republican candidate Donald Trump explained the gruesome procedure of late-term dismemberment abortion during which the baby is ripped apart limb by limb prior to being removed from the uterus.
“That is not what happens,” Clinton denied, and referred to Trump’s description as “scare rhetoric.”
However, Clinton’s claim that partial birth abortion should be protected due to a number of women who have serious health issues is not supported by research.
A study published at the pro-choice Guttmacher Institute’s Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health found that women seeking both first-trimester and late-term abortions provided the same reasons for delaying their abortions.
Dr. Elizabeth Johnson, writing at the pro-life Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI), observed that, in the study, women seeking both first-trimester and late-term abortions reported “not knowing about the pregnancy,” “trouble deciding about the abortion,” and “disagreeing about the abortion with the man involved,” with similar frequency.
“Among women in the late-term abortion group, the most commonly cited reason for delaying the procedure was ‘raising money for the procedure and related costs,’” Johnson said.
Those women in the late-term abortion group also gave reasons for delaying the procedure such as, “difficulty securing insurance coverage,” “difficulty getting to the abortion facility,” and “not knowing where to go for an abortion,” more often compared to women in the first-trimester group.
Johnson concluded:
For many years, abortion-rights advocates have asserted that abortions after 20 weeks are performed because of maternal health complications or lethal fetal anomalies discovered late in pregnancy.
However, wider data from both the medical literature and late-term abortion providers indicates that most late-term procedures are not performed for these reasons.
Previous survey studies of late-term abortion patients have confirmed that most late-term abortions are performed because of a delay in pregnancy diagnosis and for reasons similar to those given by first-trimester abortion patients: financial stressors, relationship problems, education concerns or parenting challenges.
“So many states are putting very stringent regulations on women that block them from exercising that choice,” Clinton criticized during the debate. “To the extent that they are defunding Planned Parenthood which, of course, provides all kinds of cancer screenings and other benefits for women in our country.”
Fifteen states have moved to restrict abortion in various ways since the release of the videos last year that alleged Planned Parenthood sells the body parts of babies it aborts in its clinics.
Additionally, in 2015, Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards testified before the House Oversight Committee that her organization does not provide mammograms, though she and others – including President Obama – have said that it does.
While campaigning, Clinton has compared pro-life Americans to terrorists.
“Extreme views about women, we expect that from some of the terrorist groups, we expect that from people who don’t want to live in the modern world, but it’s a little hard to take coming from Republicans who want to be the president of the United States,” she said. “Yet, they espouse out of date and out of touch policies. They are dead wrong for 21stcentury America. We are going forward, we are not going back.”
“I will defend Planned Parenthood,” Clinton said in Las Vegas. “I will defend Roe v. Wade, and I will defend women’s rights to make their own healthcare decisions. We’ve come too far to have that turned back now.”

I am sick over this..My father was born at 7 months old, so these murdered babies are developed way before 9 months..I am glad Trump said what he said to Hillary, how does one justify doing this to a tiny innocent baby..If the the mother would only wait until delivery, this child could go to a family that can’t have children, and that child would be loved. I wish Trump would have brought up the selling of fetus baby parts..I know there is just so much to remember, but planned parenthood should not exist, not when you supposenly have Obama care,, Why should my tax money go to kill unborn babies..that means I contribute to murder..God forbid Hillary gets in..She preaches so much about protecting children, but she has no empathy for painfully killing and dismembering little innocent children.. My daughter was born at 36 weeks because my blood pressure was out of control. Did I abort her because my health was at risk? No!! She was tiny (4 lbs 14 oz) but she was healthy! She’s now 14 and, as my only child, the light of my life. I dare anyone to say that my daughter didn’t have the right to live before she was even born! I’ll never ever understand having an abortion just because you don’t want the baby!
Alicia, I’m sorry that this happened to you. Fortunately, in the vast majority of cases women such as yourself can still have a safe birth (e.g. via C section). But there are other conditions where this isn’t the case. For instance, some women find out that they have serious heart conditions, and that they would not survive having a child either by natural or surgical delivery. They have to make a difficult choice of either dying themselves, having the baby, or having both themselves and the baby die. Pregnancy-related hypertension or pre-eclampsia are treatable and provide a safe route for delivery. Some conditions do not. Those are, thankfully, rare, and most of the times that terminations occur are not actually for the health of the mom- they are because the baby has severe malformations that wouldn’t allow the baby to survive or would cause the baby to live in pain and suffer.
I happen to work in medicine, although I’m not an OBGYN and don’t deliver babies. However, late-term abortions are exceedingly rare. This article sadly misrepresents that. They usually occur when a really serious complication that is not compatible with the baby’s life occurs (e.g. severe congenital malformations that won’t allow the baby to live long after birth and that would cause the baby pain and suffering). Furthermore, they don’t involve “tearing a baby apart”. They typically involve injecting a salt solution into the baby’s circulation to stop the heart and then inducing labour. The vast majority of women (>99.5%) give birth the same way that a woman giving birth to a live child would.
As for the selling baby parts, that’s just incorrect and a stupid rumour started by someone who hates Planned Parenthood. It’s a big lie targeting people like yourself to brainwash you into supporting someone’s political agenda.
I have one question what if a woman gets raped and dose not want to give birth to a baby of a rapist she should be aloud to have an abortion if she wants one in early stages.
That is just like executing the children of serial killers.. “Oh too bad kids, your daddy is a sick monster. We’re going to have to chop off your arms and legs before we crush your skull. Your daddy should have know better but it is your fault!” And honestly studies have shown that MOST women who are raped and become pregnant, carry the baby to term and place it for adoption.. The real issue about abortion is it permits a permiscuous lifestyle and tells women they are not responsible for their actions..
Well I would hope if she got rapped that she would not wait until her 3rd trimester to have an abortion, you see I am not against abortion I know life throws things at us beyond our control. But really why would it take you until the third or even second trimester to decide to abort if you were rapped.
Baby has a completely formed beating heart at six weeks and has little legs with feet and arms with hands at 8 weeks.
Most women don’t even know they’re pregnant at this time. It may be tiny, but it’s a human being.

That is wrong, think about the unborn child’s life, I myself am adopted, there are other measures rather than kill the baby… I admit it is a horrible thing to be raped, and would see it being hard to raise the child, but to have the baby killed is even more wrong…
The study that was done excluded women that had abortions for medical reasons. Also, the video was created by anti-abortionists who were then arrested due to the fact that they planted evidence and tried to purchase fetuses from planned parenthood, which they didn’t do. Also, if you want them to carry they baby to term and put them up for adoption, then you should adopt the 400k+ children waiting for a family.

Are the proliferation people will to put some of their efforts behind finding people to adopt and raise these severely disabled childre, who will need to be fed and changed into adulthood. Yes, are you willing to commit to taking on the complete care of a 35 year old man who needs his diaper changed, cannot walk, talk and needs his ventilator tube cleaned daily changed daily. Oh and he probably stares vacant and drools all day.
Are you willing to have your taxes skyrocket, and I mean skyrocket, to cover the literally tens upon tens of millions of dollars to care for each of these poor souls? The neonatal intensive care bill, just to keep them breathing can easily reach into the millions.
Unless you have spent time caring for someone like this you are probably under the delusion they are not in pain. Sorry, many people with such conditions as severe spina bifida are in agony. Why is it that we think it is ok to endorse partial term abortion, or late term/final moment abortions. But we get up in arms over the treatment of dogs and cats. Guess I had it all wrong, should have taught son and daughter to sit and stay, fetch, roll over and play dead.

Hillary chooses her words carefully, “women’s health” as she says it, meaning that if a woman can’t get an abortion it would be bad for her Mental Health, meaning Abortion On-Demand, and the Pro-Choicers all know it.
