NFL Player Who Planned to Join Kaepernick in “Sit Out” of Anthem, Suddenly Backtracks, “I’ll Stand”
What the hell has happened to the NFL?
Remember when the NFL was comprised of badass warriors who showed up on the field to KICK ASS……
…..not protest cultural issues like a bunch of mamby-pamby social justice warriors.
A Philadelphia Eagles rookie was all set to join Colin Kaepernick in sitting out the National Anthem, but hours after he announced his “big stunt” he backtracked, and now says, “No, I’ll stand for the anthem.”
Idiot.
From The Hill:
A rookie NFL player is backing down from his pledge to sit out the national anthem to protest police brutality.
Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Myke Tavarres reversed course Monday, hours after saying he would join San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick in sitting during the anthem.
“He plans on standing for the national anthem,” said Corey Williams, Tavarres’ agent, according to ESPN.
“Myke does not want to be a distraction to the Philadelphia Eagles organization. Myke’s goal is and will always be to make the Eagles 53-man roster and help the team win a Super Bowl.”
Williams said he had advised Tavarres not to emulate Kaepernick’s demonstration last Friday.
Tavarres would have been the second NFL player to publicly demonstrate against police mistreatment of minorities. He had originally planned on sitting through the song during his team’s home game Thursday against the New York Jets.
“We’ve got an issue in this country in this day and age, and I feel like somebody needs to step up and we all need to step up,” Tavarres told ESPN earlier Monday.
“We’ve got that right,” he added. “There’s just a lot going on people don’t want to talk about, and I feel like us as athletes, we’re looked at as role models.
“And I feel like with Colin Kaepernick, he’s doing a great job standing up for what he believes in, and most people may not like that, but that’s his opinion, he’s entitled to it, and I respect him for doing it.”
Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz conducted an open forum over the protest during a group meeting Monday, multiple players told ESPN.
One source in attendance said Tavarres was one of several speakers, along with safety Malcolm Jenkins and cornerback Leodis McKelvin.
ESPN added that Tavarres is an undrafted rookie who survived the Eagles’ first round of roster cuts. He is now trying to earn a permanent slot playing on its special teams.
Translation: The team said, “No a-hole, you’ll be standing.”
