HEARTWARMING VIDEO : Judge Does the Unthinkable to Support a Veteran with PTSD
This is America at its finest. This is humanity at its finest.
After a judge sentenced a former Green Beret who is suffering with PTSD to a night in jail, he did the unthinkable. The judge went to the jail and stayed with him through the night.
Joe Serna is a retired, decorated US Army Green Beret. He’s the real deal and has been awarded two purple heart medals.
But, his three tours in Afghanistan left him with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), from which so many of our veterans suffer. This disorder can have both emotional and physical effects on the sufferers, which can severely impact their life.
The worst night that Serna faced in Afghanistan was when his vehicle, which was carrying him and three other soldiers, went into a creek and filled with water. All four were trapped, and immobile. The water reached Serna’s chin before he was rescued. The other three perished. Today, Joe has intense fear of small, cramped spaces — like a jail cell.
As a result, he is having coping with normal activities of life and has turned to alcohol. And the alcohol led him to violating his probation.
“I gave Joe a night in jail because he had to be held accountable.” Olivera said. Serna lied in court about a urine test, perhaps, understandably, trying to hide his struggles with alcohol.
Judge Lou Olivera, a former Gulf War veteran himself, knew all too well how difficult this night would likely be for Serna. “I just didn’t want him to be alone.” Olivera said. So, a few minutes after Joe was locked-up, the Judge surprised him by joining him for the entire night.
“That meant so much to me.” Serna told Olivera. Indeed, it did, Joe. Not just to you but to me. And to all who see this story. The Green Beret’s motto is De Oppresso Liber, Latin for “to free the oppressed.” Oppression can have many faces. As you sacrificed to save others, so Olivera sacrificed to free you of your anxiety.
Serna said, “He is a judge, but that night, he was my battle buddy… He knew what I was going through. As a warrior, he connected.”
