I have voted since I turned 18 and have never seen anything like what is going on in the streets of our country. I don’t understand why our current President hasn’t put his foot down and encourage everyone to come together. There isn’t anything that is right about what is going in the streets of our country. It makes me sick to my stomach on how the world sees such turmoil in our streets.

Donald Trump actually indirectly ignited these protests with his divisive rhetoric and bitterly polarizing campaign. After all, it was Trump—not President Obama or Hillary—who called women fat pigs and verbally attacked anyone who disagreed with him. He even insinuated that Megyn Kelly, a professional journalist, was menstruating just because she asked him the “tough” questions. I know that many of us may have become too politically correct, but Trump swings the pendulum too far in the other direction. I would have disciplined my children for saying and behaving the way that he has done. His demeanor is far from presidential, and I would not want my children to emulate his example. He constantly called Hillary “crooked” while he himself refused to release his taxes, duped students at Trump University, and rode the waves to power on the lies about the birther movement questioning the legitimacy of President Obama (for which Trump never apologized to President Obama). In addition, my heart was literally torn in two as I watched scenes of a young child chanting “lock her up” and wearing a prison jumpsuit. What are we teaching our children? Also, what happened to innocent until proven guilty? Trump encouraged such actions, however, with his incendiary rhetoric. Now, one would think that a man whose past diatribes have proven that he is neither reticent nor reserved when it comes to denouncing what he dislikes would have words just as harsh for David Duke, right? Wrong. He pretended initially that he did not know who Duke is, and he only tacitly denounced the Klan’s endorsement of his campaign. Steven Bannon of the alt-right is one of his chief advisers. Why would the protesters now close ranks and join hands with Trump when he has told us and shown us who he is? He used Machiavellian tactics to achieve his goals, and we are still hurt by his antics. Had Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, or any of the other fine and respectable Republican candidates for president beaten Hillary, these protests would not be happening. I agree that the protests should be peaceful, but they must continue to send a strong message to Trump that he does not have a mandate to push forward with his proposed xenophobic, sexist, and racist agenda—while wrapping himself in an American flag to try to shield himself from criticism. Such a tactic is no more acceptable than the Klansmen who tout the Cross of Christ while peddling hatred. Many Southerners who participated in the lynching of Sam Hose in Georgia in 1899 had just left church before they carried out their brutal action. Just because we denounce such actions does not mean that we do not love our country or respect the office of the presidency. Protesters are not calling for the end of the presidency but for the curtailment of Trump’s proposed policies. Just as you invited the protesters to leave if they don’t like America, you also have the option of leaving America if you don’t like the protesters. If you should decide to return, you will find that they still have the right to peacefully protest just as you have the right to disagree with their actions. Donald Trump has only himself to blame, after his scorched earth policy to the presidency, for the oxymoronic bitter divide in the United States. Again, Trump catalyzed the divisiveness, and now his supporters want President Obama and Hillary to fix it. No, the job of mending fences lies at the feet of Donald Trump.
