At least 21 people were injured Saturday evening when an apparent drunken driver drove a vehicle into a crowd during the Endymion parade in Mid-City, police said.

New Orleans police said the crash happened before 7 p.m. at Orleans and Carrollton avenues, where Endymion rolled through for its annual Carnival parade.

Officials said someone driving a pickup truck crashed into the crowd, injuring numerous people along the parade route. Mayor Mitch Landrieu said the victims were taken to at least 10 hospitals. None of them sustained life-threatening injuries.

The driver, who has not been identified, was taken into custody. New Orleans police Chief Micheal Harrison said Saturday the driver was “highly intoxicated.”
Harrison said the driver was traveling on the opposite side of the parade when he struck two vehicles, veered off to the other side and struck a dump truck. Before the driver struck the dump truck, several pedestrians were hit.

Multiple law enforcement officers, paramedics and bystanders helped the victims. Harrison said the victims range from children 3-4 years old and to adults in their 30s and 40s. Seven victims declined transportation to the hospital.
