The founder of Papa John’s isn’t happy about where the US is headed.
In his new book “Papa: The Story of Papa John’s Pizza,” CEO John Schnatter slams greedy executives and says regulations are steering the country in a dangerous direction — away from the system of free enterprise he believes is crucial to the nation’s success.
“America in 2016 is on the path to becoming what Germany was in 1867,” Schnatter writes in “Papa.”
1867 is the year that Schnatter’s great-grandfather immigrated to the US from Germany, as a young craftsman seeking work.
“[Germany] was profoundly not a land of opportunity,” Schnatter writes. “If you believed the wrong thing, the government attacked you. If you became successful, the government took your money. And if you dared go against the whims and will of society’s rulers, the government beheaded you.”
Now, Schnatter believes the US is headed in the same direction.
“[F]ree enterprise is increasingly under assault by a government that grows bigger with every passing day,” he writes.
Speaking with Business Insider, Schnatter emphasized that he believes that regulation in the US needs to be dialed back to help businesses thrive.
“You’ve got to have free markets with limited government, with the proper amount of regulation where you don’t jam entrepreneurship,” Schnatter said.
In 2012, Schnatter came under fire for saying the Affordable Care Act could be “lose-lose” for Papa John’s franchisees and employees, and said that the law would raise pizza prices. Papa John’s shares slumped about 4.2% during the controversy, Forbes reported.
Schnatter donated $1,000 to President Trump’s campaign, but is wary about getting to too political these days.
“As far as the politics, I have no idea,” he said. “I do think we ought to give the new administration at least a chance to either do better things or to botch it.”
In terms of regulation, at least, President Trump seems likely to redirect the restaurant industry in a direction Schnatter would appreciate. The president has promised to eliminate “wasteful and unnecessary regulation which kills jobs.”

We have been getting Papa Johns for awhile now. They at least give you some garlic sauces with your pizza. Order online for good deals and earn points for free pizza. Love Papa Johns! Wish more would stand up for our President.

We never have bought Papa John’s, although they have several locations very close to us. We do buy pizza fairly regularly, and will gladly cover your list business and that of a couple of others. You see, I, too, have a small business and agree with Schnatter. We’ll be buying pizza for local little league teams and other such groups. They won’t miss your business.

What John needs to do is tell the government that Delivery Drivers are not Waiters and Waitresses ! If U are a driver as soon as U enter into the computer system that U are a delivery the U go from making Min wage to a servers wage ! That is just so stupid ! All the driver is doing is delivering a product to your door not waiting on you as a server would do ! After almost 40 years doing Pizza Delivery this is the reason I quit doing it ! All major Pizza Corps have taken this form of wage decreasing to their employees !!!!!
I Tried of ran them out of town, with their low quality pizza and poor service. They just had more money backing them And scrimping on toppings, and never supported any local athletic group whatsoever. Charging them $6.00 for a cheese pizza $7.00 for a pepperoni pizza when they were ordering 40 of them. Really great job Poop alot John . I charge them 4 dollars a pizza, I did not steal them blind. As I ended up selling 80 pizzas that night. Plus regular business. I love the fact youth groups could come to any of my shop any time and get a better deal to help them out. Fund-raising or functions. 10 pizzas or more. football games ,collage dorm orders /same deal/ What I could understand, after buying out mom and pop shops in creating a thriving business Why was not able to continue my lease. After three years. In all three locations? I get kicked out as the storefront sit empty for two years. Go figure Big money wins ,As I had better pizza you smuck/
Sounds like you ran your own self out of business? Why do you have to blame it on someone else? You should have had better pizza so more people would buy from you. You know, money talks and B.S. walks and it looks like you walked.
