BREAKING : Mattis is Approved by Senate – He is Officially the Secretary of Defense!
Retired Marine Gen. James Mattis was approved by the Senate Committee on Armed Services to serve as secretary of defense in Donald Trump’s administration.
From Free Beacon:
Retired Marine Gen. James Mattis was approved on Wednesday by the Senate Committee on Armed Services to serve as secretary of defense in Donald Trump’s administration.
Mattis sailed through the committee, which voted 26-1 for him to lead the Pentagon. Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.) was the only member of the Senate panel to vote against the retired four-star general, who enjoys bipartisan support to head the Defense Department under President-elect Trump.
Gillibrand has previously said she would oppose confirming Mattis because he only retired from the Marine Corps in 2013, while federal law requires a seven-year break between military service and heading the Defense Department as a civilian.
Both chambers of Congress passed a waiver last week allowing Mattis to serve as defense secretary, exempting him from the seven-year rule. Such an exemption has only been passed one other time since the law was enacted, for Gen. George Marshall to lead the Defense Department in the 1950s.
Defense experts have testified that allowing Mattis to head the Pentagon would not damage the principle of civilian control of the military.
The Senate Armed Services Committee released a statement Wednesday on its vote to approve Mattis.
Today, the Senate Armed Services Committee voted 26-1 to recommend that the Senate gives its advice and consent to the nomination of James Mattis to be secretary of defense when it is received by the Senate from the president. As a result of the action taken by the committee, General Mattis’ official nomination will be sent directly to the Senate without referral to the committee.

By Gillabrand’s contention he was not retired long enough? That’s like people saying I should not go back to teaching after being out for the same length of time. But here’s the real deal, he has credentials that far surpasses even her. Awww another snowflake not happy with this appointment.
