Anti-Trump Millennials Planning a Permanent “Protest Safe Space” Near White House
A group of millennials who oppose Donald Trump are planning to open a permanent space near the White House next month to protest the president-elect and ensure “he doesn’t succeed.”
Activists said the so-called “movement house,” dubbed “District 13” in reference to a defiant community in the Hunger Games series, will be set up by Inauguration Day on Jan. 20, the Guardian reported Wednesday.
The organizers are pitching the location as a “space for the best kinds of troublemakers from around the country.”
“Ultimately it’s to make sure we hold him accountable,” Moumita Ahmed, the founder of Millennials for Revolution, which derived from a Bernie Sanders support group, told the Guardian.
“Because his presidency is not normal at all. It’s our duty to make sure he doesn’t succeed. If he succeeds it’s a message that everything he stood for is OK. That it’s OK to get to power in the way that he did, and hurt all the people he’s hurt,” Ahmed continued.
The property will be located in the Capitol Hill neighborhood in close proximity to the Capitol building and White House. Activists, primarily “woman of color” who supported Sanders’ presidential bid, said the space will allow protesters to “quickly mobilize” against Trump.
The group has launched a crowdfunding page in hopes of raising $50,000 to cover the house’s rent for a year. Activists have so far raised just under $10,000 for the effort.
