A Brief History of “Never Trump” Nebraskan Ben Sasse
By Babe Elder
And then comes Nebraska.
May 10th will be an interesting day in Nebraska voting history. Its Governor and one of its senators have refused to align themselves with the Republican front-runner, Donald Trump.
Prior to Trump obtaining the status of the Presumptive Nominee, Republican Governor Pete Ricketts had publicly said he would endorse whoever gains the GOP nomination. Mr. Ricketts, however, is one of The Chicago Ricketts. Mother Marlene, the wife of billionaire TD Ameritrade founder Joe Ricketts, donated 3 million dollars in January to the Katie Packer super Pac to stop Trump. Collectively, the family is not loyal to a single political party.
Nebraska senator Ben Sasse has also been vehemently opposed to the Trump candidacy since Sasse appears to believe Trump is not loyal to a single political party. (Wait. What?)
Recently, Sasse penned an open letter on Facebook where he seems to have polled Wal-Mart shoppers in Fremont, Nebraska as the “Go-to source” to guide the letter and, possibly, the future of both the Republican and Democratic parties. He may be suggesting unhappy Republicans and Democrats should align and find a super hero to satisfy all their needs. It appears that the majority of the voting Republicans aren’t good enough for Ben Sasse since they’ve evidently spoiled everything by voting in Trump. In his sad lament, he seems to describe much of the Trump candidacy but, just as clearly, Sasse’s appears unaware that the description is almost a picture-perfect portrait of Trump.
The Blaze reported in March 2016 that a Pac had formed to urge Ben Sasse to run for president, however, Sasse said he wouldn’t run, citing small children at home.
Another conservative group, Club For Growth, has also targeted Trump but now says they’ll back off. Club for Growth had previously told its preferred candidates and those vying for its support to stay away from Trump. It appears they will make a list and check it twice before donating to Trump endorsers in the future.
Interesting to note that Club for Growth contributed almost $300,000 to Sasse’s campaign in 2014. Governor Pete Ricketts has also donated to Sasse.
Probably the donations are unrelated to Sasse’s dislike of Trump. Because everyone knows that Senators are never required to be beholden to their donors. Of course, if you believe that, there are a large number of Nigerian email marketers that would be eager to do business with you.
